Why has it become so difficult for me to shift my toddler boy from our bed to his own cot? We have told him that it is going to be his own space and there will be no Mommy watching over him, despite the temptation he just refuses to shift!

This is a common problem that most parents face especially when the kid has been sleeping with the parents since birth. Children require a little time to settle into a new atmosphere and probably your kid is too afraid to try that alone. Why don’t you get a mattress to sleep on beside the cot, put him to sleep in it and once he has slept shift to the comforts of your bed. Try this, I’m sure it’ll work.

I am a single Dad and I thought my kid should be taught to appreciate the concept of independence from a young age. The first thing that you can do to start this journey for your kid is to train him in the importance of sleeping alone. Talk to your child, read to him, sing him a lullaby, whatever works till he goes to sleep, but make sure that he does that in his own cot. A cot is one of man’s lesser acknowledged but highly efficient work of art. It is a progression from the mother’s womb, the frame around the cot acting as an excellent barrier for the kid to protect him from fall. I love the fact that nowadays my kid refuses to sleep on the bed with me. He has started to love his own space, he lets his imagination run wild in the cot building up stories from nowhere, I only wish I could go back to reliving those cot days!!

Don’t make your toddler dependant on you to such an extent that he refuses to leave your side! A great idea would be to buy him a comfortable cot and decorate that with his favorite animation characters. I think your child is too young to know about his space and the importance of it, so create one for him. Spice up the cot, make it a world he would hate to leave and don’t complain later when he just refuses to leave the cot!! Best of Luck!!

If your kid doesn’t want to shift from your bed why don’t you shift to his cot?? Jokes apart I think it is a great idea to invest in a cot that offers the Convert-a-cot option. With this you can easily pull out the bed under the cot for the night, put your toddler to sleep in the cot next to you and also go to sleeping the bed yourself. It will probably require a little adjustment from your side but we do so many things for our kids, lets add this to that!!

Kids will be kids and parents will be parents!! Let him sleep with you for a while, he’ll know when to move when the leg space becomes too little for him. Good luck till then…
